Before You Arrive

Once the decision to move to Beijing has been made, the long list of ‘to dos’ begins. Arrangements need to be made both in your country and in China, ahead of your arrival.

• To get a work visa (Z Visa) and resident’s permit, you will need confirmation of employment before departure. So task one is to find a job. Employment agencies at home and in Beijing are a good place to start, as are expat magazines and websites.
• Ensure all paperwork is sent well in advance from employers in China.
• Apply for your visa one to two months in advance. Additional or unexpected paperwork may take time to gather.
• Put your home property on the market or consider renting it out. If you are renting, be sure to notify your landlord well in advance.
• Ship your belongings to China (this can take up to six weeks).
• Book flights in advance (prices increase closer to the date of departure). If taking pets, be sure to notify the airline.
• Get pets vaccinated against rabies at least three months before departure.
• Cancel direct debits or standing orders or ensure there are sufficient funds in your bank account to accommodate them (transferring money from China is time-consuming and costly).
• Notifying tax and pension authorities, banks and student loans companies.
• Notify utility companies and cancel mobile phone contracts.
• Research schools and housing. The city is vast, so consider looking for housing and schools close to your work. Your embassy or employer can help provide a list of international schools, fees and acceptance criteria.
