Romanians & Bulgarians

As of 1 January 2007, Romanian and Bulgarian citizens do not need visas to enter Ireland. However, when it comes to living and working here, citizens from these countries fall into two different categories: those who were legally living in Dublin before 31 December 2006 and those who are not yet resident in Ireland. Those who have been living legally in Ireland for at least 12 continuous months prior to 1 January 2007, can continue working and living here. Those who have not been living in Ireland no longer need a visa to enter the country, as they did in the past, but otherwise they are more or less legally in the same situation as non-EU citizens, needing work permits and other related red tape, if they want to work here.
