Kuala Lumpur has a fairly active gay and lesbian scene in spite of the fact that same-gender sexual activity is illegal. Although homophobia is rare, it is wise to act discreetly and avoid unwanted attention – remember that even between straight couples overt displays of affection are considered inappropriate. There are some gay and lesbian bars and clubs in the Central Market area, on Jalan Sultan Ismail, and on Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang.
