People With Disabilities

People with disabilities do not fare particularly well in Kuala Lumpur, although the situation is slowly improving. Pavements are sometimes uneven, often having several different levels in one block, and ramps for wheelchairs are few and inconsistently distributed. Kerbs are very high. Airports, hotels and tourist attractions usually have elevators to accommodate those with disabilities, but not always. Parking spots for people with disabilities are largely non-existent. Public toilets (with the exception of airports) probably do not have a disabled toilet. However, as a general rule, the newer a facility is, the more likely it is to have made some accommodation for those with disabilities. The modern light rail systems such as the Monorail, however, are reasonably accessible. Both Malaysia Airlines and KTM (the national rail service) give 50% discounts to travellers with disabilities.
