Monarchy

The House of Orange Nassau has governed the Netherlands since 1915. William I (1772-1843), William II (1792-1849) and William III (1817-1890) were followed by the doughty Queen Wilhelmina (1880-1962) whose 50-year reign spanned two world wars and the decolonisation of Indonesia. Her only daughter Queen Juliana (1909-2004) was the cycling monarch whose unconventional views caused a few ructions. Queen Beatrix (born 1938), came to the throne in 1980 after her mother abdicated and is more formal than her mother but is widely admired for her professionalism and modern management style. She is well-educated, reasonably progressive, interested in the arts and politically ambiguous (very much the modern Nederlander). In the forming of new coalitions, Queen Beatrix has some power, but her role is mainly ceremonial, such as at the Queen’s Speech that is part of the state opening of Parliament in Den Haag (Prinsjesdag). She will be succeeded by the Prince of Orange, Willem-Alexander (born 1967).
