Train

Trains are reliable and frequent in the Netherlands and reach areas not served directly by trams or buses. Many people commute between the cities of the Ranstad. (They may live in Amsterdam and work in Den Haag, or the other way round). The website www.ns.nl gives info in English on routes and tickets. Train fares are reasonable and can be made even cheaper with a korting (discount) card which is well worth having. For €55 a year there's a 40% discount on all off-peak rail travel, not just for you but up to three other people with whom you are travelling. Train connections with other Amsterdam stations such as exhibition centre RAI and business zone Sloterdijk are extremely frequent. Many trains are double deckers. You must buy (or stamp) a ticket before you board – ticket inspection is frequent and so are fines. Amsterdam has three international rail links: Belgium and France to the south, and Germany to the east.
