Amsterdam is well known for its tolerant attitude towards the sex industry. Perhaps it is down to the legalisation of prostitution in the Netherlands that there are not really many strip clubs in town. A UK man tried to open one recently, The Zebra Lounge, and was forced by the city to close it and re-open as a nightclub, no strippers. There are plenty of brothels scattered around town and three centralised red-light districts where you will see women presenting themselves in windows. The main one is close to central station, the other two are to be found running parallel to Singel and on the edge of de Pijp. Although there are no ‘real’ strip shows there are a few venues that offer erotic entertainment and sex shows. They tend to focus on the theatre aspect of sex and many find them humorously exaggerated.
