Cinemas

Amsterdam has quite a few cinemas. Pathe has several large multiplexes in and around the city. The largest being Pathe Arena where there is an Imax. There are also a good number of independent cinemas that show art house flicks and golden oldies. Films are always shown in their original languages with Dutch subtitles which is great, but if you’re going to see a foreign film make sure your Dutch is up to scratch. Occasionally you’ll find a film in the video store before it makes it to the cinemas as the film release date is so far behind the release date in the original country; this doesn’t usually happen with the blockbusters though. The facilities in the cinemas are quite good but vary from location to location. You can’t always get popcorn but you can always get a beer or wine to carry into the theatre. The Tuchinski, now part of the Pathe chain, is one of the oldest and most beautiful cinemas. It was recently refurnished and is well worth checking out. To find out film times you can check the Pathe website for any big name movies or go to www.biosagenda.nl which has the information from independents as well.
