Health Check-Ups

Yearly medical check-ups aren’t common practice in the Netherlands, but you can request one with your GP. Doctors here generally don’t feel it’s necessary to check for something if you don’t feel unwell. They do however have a nationwide screening programme for cervical cancer and breast cancer. All women registered at the city hall between the ages of 30 and 55 are eligible for the cervical cancer screening, with the GP or gynaecologist taking a Pap smear once every five years. If you are concerned between these screening schedules you may request another Pap smear from your doctor. Screening for breast cancer is also available at special centres nationwide. Mammograms are performed for women between the ages of 50 and 75, but if you are under 50 you can also request one. Blood tests and all other health check-ups are arranged through your GP.
