Pharmacies

Once you’ve registered with your GP you should find an apotheek (pharmacy/chemist) in your area that you can use regularly. The apotheek will record your family’s details and enter them into their computer system for reference. Your doctor can then write or fax your prescriptions directly to the chemist for you to pick up at your convenience. When filling in prescriptions, you can also arrange with the apotheek to charge your insurance company directly. In case you’re confused about what the difference is between a drogist and an apotheek, a drogist (druggist) is only allowed to sell over-the-counter non-prescription drugs, while an apotheek dispenses prescription medicines. Pharmacists here are highly trained and are able to give medical advice for minor complaints. Many pharmacies are open Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 17:30, and some even on Saturday for half a day. There is always a pharmacy on duty in your area at the weekend, during holidays and at night. The on-duty rotation schedule for local pharmacies is displayed in the window.
