Changing Jobs

Given the number of opportunities opening up in China, finding a new job shouldn’t be too hard. You have to be careful about visa requirements as it is necessary to change the name of your sponsoring company on your visa and work permit. Teachers in particular need to obtain a ‘letter of release’ from their previous employer which allows them to change their residence permit. This can be a tiresomely bureaucratic procedure.

Be warned that moving to a new industry altogether can be quite tough; recruitment agencies say that while there are plenty of jobs available in China, they prefer to put forward candidates with relevant experience.

Companies in some sectors will include non-compete clauses. These will prevent you from working for a competitor for a certain period after leaving their employment, which could mean you spend time on so-called ‘gardening leave.’ Again, it is best to keep a sharp eye on such things when you’re settling your initial contract.
