Democracy ended here in 1933 with the fire that allowed the Nazis to seize total power. Now visitors in a reunited Germany can feel the thrill of the rebirth of freedom by climbing up into the glass dome version – echoing the classical cupola knocked out by Russian bombs and suggesting a new transparency in government. Indeed, you can watch parliament meet from up high. The view outside is pretty incredible, too, though the queues can be daunting.
