Applying For A Private Health Insurance

It is advisable to have private health insurance when living in Dubai, although in most cases, your employer (or spouse’s employer) will provide this as part of your contract.

Under a new law introduced in January 2014, Dubai companies with 1,000 or more employees must cover their staff with private health insurance before the end of October 2014; smaller companies with 100-999 employees will have until the end of July 2015, and companies with fewer than 100 have until the end of June 2016 to cover their employees. Health insurance packages, which must come from a government approved provider, cover all essential health services including emergency care, access to GPs, referral to specialists, tests and investigations, surgical procedures and maternity care.

Prerequisites

  • Must have (or be in the process of applying for) a residence visa.
  • If the insurance is required for your residence visa, then you must make sure the insurer is government-approved.

What to bring

  • Passport with residence visa (original and copy).
  • Proof of address (original and copy).
  • Passport-sized photos (two).
  • Your family doctor’s contact details. The insurer may ask for copies of any relevant diagnostic reports or test results from your doctor if they need further information regarding your medical history.
  • Families may be required to provide proof of marriage for spousal visas; or proof of enrolment at an educational facility for child dependants aged 18 and over.

Procedure

  • Contact insurer for a quote; visit insureme.ae for online insurance comparison or uae-medical-insurance.com for a quote.
  • Complete an application form and submit the original documents.
  • Payment is usually accepted via cheque. In most cases, you must pay the full 12 months upfront.
