Whatever your shopping habits, you'll find something to suit your needs in Dubai, where every budget, taste, need or inclination is provided for across an enormous scope of options.
Practicality plays a large part in the mall culture; during the hotter months, Dubai's shopping malls are oases of cool in the sweltering city – somewhere to walk, shop, eat and be entertained.
SOUKS, MARKETS AND INDEPENDENT STORES
But it doesn’t end there – the city’s shopping highlights include traditional souks and quirky markets, boutiques, a few thrift shops, a plethora of designer names and a growing number of original independent stores. There are new unique shopping hubs cropping up all the time, and several residential areas now have something akin to a high street.
BUDGET OR BLOW-OUT
The thing that makes shopping here so appealing is the fantastic range of products; there is very little that is not available and for most items there is enough choice to fit any budget, from the streets of Karama with its fake designer goods, to the shops in the malls that sell the real thing. With the population being largely transitory, there is no shortage of second-hand goods, and it’s worth venturing out of the city for bigger items; Sharjah and Ajman are known for their cheaper prices. You may find that imported items and brands, particularly from the international high-street stores, carry an extra few dirhams to compensate for the cost of importing the goods.
Most shops are open until 10pm every night and even later at the weekends. You can often do your grocery shopping till midnight, and a few of the major supermarkets are open 24 hours a day. The malls are particularly busy at the weekend, especially on Friday evenings. Things change slightly during Ramadan, when some shops close from noon until around 7pm.
