Furnishing Your Home

The Beijing expat scene is constantly changing, which means second-hand furniture is usually available somewhere. A good place to start looking is online. Local expat magazine That’s Beijing maintains a website (www.thebeijinger.com) that has a healthy For Sale/Wanted section. TVs, sofas, and electronic equipment are regularly on offer. If you are involved in the diplomatic communities, some embassies have furniture sales once or twice a year. You need to have diplomatic identification to purchase goods at these garage sales. Embassies import items into China duty free so can only sell items to individuals who have similar diplomatic tax exemptions. Noticeboards at the expat grocery stores such as Jenny Lou’s, April Gourmet, and the Friendship Store are also good sources for used furniture.
