Moving Services

There are several firms that offer relocation services. International companies charge steep prices, usually between $500 and $1,000 per cubic metre. They also provide well-trained staff and can organise visa arrangements, customs clearance, and all packing and unpacking. Generally, a smaller shipment will incur a costlier rate per cubic metre. Multinational employers usually cover the costs of relocating, but if you are moving alone, get quotes from at least three companies. Packing boxes yourself and leaving some stuff at home will help lower the price.

There are several regulations to keep in mind. The usual items are prohibited: weapons and firearms, counterfeit goods, pornographic materials, endangered species, certain milk and meat products, and plants and seeds. Alcohol carries a very high import tax. Other items are less obvious, and materials that might be deemed politically offensive or anti-communist may be worth checking with your local Chinese embassy.

If you are not deeply attached to your furniture, leave some of it behind. Beijing furniture stores are stocked with beautiful pieces that sell for a fraction of the price that they would in Europe or North America. Finely crafted, Chinese wooden pieces abound. European styles are harder to find, but it is inexpensive to have furniture custom-made. If you are moving locally, you can hire a domestic company, which charges around ¥2,000 per cubic metre.
