Mitte
Since the fall of the Wall, Mitte has transformed itself more than any other district of Berlin. Long gone are the bombed-out buildings flooded by squatters in the early 90s; in their place has risen a chic district of art galleries, upmarket boutiques, ad agencies and architecture firms. Living up to its name as the middle of the reunified Berlin, Mitte is also the heart of tourist Berlin. The district holds Museum Island, the Brandenburg Gate and scores of other top tourist attractions, and tour groups pour in during summer. Mitte is Berlin’s centre not only for fashion and tourism but also for the German government and for cultural institutions such as opera and theatre. Mitte residents tend to be international, sophisticated and urbane; many are successful creative professionals.
