Dos & Don’ts
Some of the laws to which Angelenos have grown accustomed may surprise international visitors. Seat belt and drink driving laws are rigidly enforced, for example. The national legal BAC limit for alcohol consumption is 0.08 so don’t get behind the wheel after imbibing. Rather than risk arrest or an accident, you can call one of the multiple car and taxi services to pick you up, or AAA of Southern California (800 400 4222) for a tow home. And remember that open containers of any alcoholic beverage are prohibited within any vehicle, even if held by a backseat passenger. Smoking is banned in all restaurants, bars and clubs, so head outside to huddle with the other smokers if you must light up. And although it may seem silly, the LAPD periodically binge on enforcing jaywalking laws, which is no joke when you get stuck with a hefty fine.
