Generally speaking, LA is a safe city. It has its share of crime, as does any big metropolis the world over. Women travelling alone in Los Angeles would be wise to take the same precautions as anywhere else. As in most American cities, catcalling or other forms of street-side harassment are rare, but it is still a good idea to stride confidently and always act like you know where you’re going, even when you don’t. Most areas can empty out at night, and those that don’t can be some of the rougher neighbourhoods, so try to have a companion with you if you have to walk after dark. That said, LA rightly has a reputation for ostentatious self-display, so women can freely wear expensive jewellery or whatever style of clothing they like, from conservative to extremely revealing, in most areas without feeling unsafe or self-conscious.
