Districts In Meguro-ku

Aobadai & Naka-Meguro – Running adjacent to the Megurogawa, the neighbourhoods of Aobadai are quiet, and as you get closer to Naka-Meguro the buildings get more stylish and expensive. This area is best suited for young professionals, singles and couples who are looking for one bedroom, two bedroom and 1K apartments. One bedroom and 1K apartments run from ¥150,000 to ¥200,000 per month, depending on the age of the building and how close it is to the river. You can also find some Japanese-style wooden homes if you look hard.

Gakugeidaigaku – This area, which includes Himonya Kōen, is a more affordable option, with two bedroom units averaging ¥300,000 a month.

Jiyūgaoka – This is a main shopping hub for Western Tokyo with a wide variety of small boutiques, larger international shops, and relaxing cafes. The streets around the station are small and quaintly paved in some spots, and it’s popular with artistic types, singles, and young couples. It’s only 15 minutes from Shibuya on the Denentoshi line and is home to GREGG International School (www.gis-j.com). Accommodation is mostly one and two bedroom apartments, with prices ranging from ¥170,000 to ¥300,000 per month. More upscale designer homes go for upwards of ¥1 million per month.
Kamiōsaki – This area joins Ebisu in Shibuya-ku, and is well known for being an area with established families and a rich and moneyed history. Accommodation is generally in three bedroom or larger houses, and apartments which are considered prime property, costing millions of yen per month. Many of the homes have gardens or courtyards and some even have pools. This area is a favourite with embassy families and business people. The Nature Study Kōen nearby offers some welcome greenery.

Meguro – Although mostly in Meguro-ku, this area also commonly includes the area around Meguro station, slightly inside Shinagawa-ku. With detached and semi-detached homes, it’s known as one of the places where the local embassy expats live. There are more shops and businesses near the station and quieter pockets in the neighbourhoods. You can find lofts as cheap as ¥70,000 a month, and detached homes with three bedrooms, a garden and a pool for upwards of ¥1 million a month.

Sangenjaya – Just outside Meguro-ku, Sangenjaya is still somewhat pricey to live in, but you can find good value for money. It’s surprisingly quaint and offers a number of fine restaurants.
