Tachikawa-shi

Just a 30 minute train ride from Shinjuku, Tachikawa-shi is a blend of urban and suburban co-existence. The station area has some high rise commercial buildings, being one of the main stops and hubs on the JR Chūō line. The Tama monorail also stops in Tachikawa. The expat community doesn’t have quite as strong a presence as in other areas of Tokyo, so this might give you a more unique Tokyo living experience.

You can find convenient shopping choices such as Isetan, Marui, and Takashimaya department stores. Electronics giant Bic Camera also has an outlet, as does HMV Records. The Cinema City movie complex has a karaoke box to maximise your entertainment choices. Just 10 minutes from the station is Showa Kinen, which provides a nice green space to relax. The park also puts on spectacular fireworks over the summer months.

There are plenty of one, two and three bedroom apartments located close to the station that may be more affordable than in other places closer to the city centre. One bedroom units start from as little as ¥70,000 a month in a modestly aged building to as high as ¥300,000 a month for something in one of the newer apartment blocks. Houses can be found further from the station, usually in slightly older but quiet, and inviting neighbourhoods. Prices start at ¥200,000 per month for a two bedroom unit.

Tachikawa Hospital is located a short distance from the station. The international schools in Musashino-shi are close by, so school commutes may not be too long. The station area is rather built-up, so shopping crowds and noise from the station may be a concern, however in the neighbourhoods peace and quiet are the norm.
