Deposits for month-long rentals range from ¥10,000 to ¥20,000 depending on the model. For daily rentals deposits range from ¥5,000 to ¥10,000. For Passats, Audis and Buicks the average rental price is between ¥7,000 and ¥8,000 per month or ¥400 to ¥500 per day. For Toyota Corollas the average rental price is between ¥4,000 and ¥5,000 per month or ¥180 to ¥200 per day. If a rental car breaks down, the driver should call the service centre offered by the rental company. The service centre should be able to provide on-site assistance within two hours. If the problem is serious, the rental company should provide the driver with another car. Be aware, however, that workers at the service centre will not be able to speak English. After returning a rental car, the rental company will take 20 days to check with the police about any accidents and to check the car for damages. If no fines have been incurred and no damage has been done to the car, the deposit will then be refunded. In the case of a fine or damage to the car, the renter must go to a police station to pay any fines or repair costs.
