Rubbish Disposal & Recycling
The handling of rubbish and recycling is almost invisible to most expats. A large dustbin on each floor of an apartment, or a central dumpster near a house, will usually be the only spot you need to know. There are no fees, and municipal trucks come nightly to most areas to take rubbish to landfills. Many newcomers are upset at the lack of obvious recycling, but waste is actually sorted at its destination, providing a lot of employment. Workers sort glass, plastic, paper and metal to sell for reprocessing. You may be able to sell some recyclables yourself – stacks of cardboard, for instance, can earn a few kuai from the collectors who roam the streets on small carts. Beer bottles are one of the few items where recycling is directly encouraged. A deposit may be charged for each one, and given back on return of the empty bottle.
