Bicycles

With at least one bike store in every neighbourhood, you won’t need to look far to find some wheels. RSG Fahrradladen sells new and used Dutch bikes in good condition and will custom make them from €500. If you’re after something practical but fashionable, pick from the range of Danish bikes at Fahrradladen Mehringhof.

Radwerkstatt in Schöneberg is the best place to get your bike repaired or upgraded.

If you’re looking for a mountain or racing bike, try Bike Company, which also offers a body scan test to determine which bike will best suit your height and build. If you just want wheels for the weekend, Bike Company hires them out Friday to Monday for €12 (with a refundable €50 deposit).

If you don’t want to commit to a full-day rental, the most hassle-free service is Call A Bike. You simply register via phone to receive a registration code, and activate your account with a credit card. Bikes are generally picked up at one of the five bicycle stations in the inner city, but you can lock them up and leave them at any major intersection when you’re done.

Around 23,000 bikes are reported stolen in Berlin each year and only about 5% are retrieved, so getting your date of birth and initials engraved into the seat stem could be a good idea. Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad Club offers this service for €10 (www.adfc-berlin.de/home).
