Headwear is seasonal in Berlin. You’ll won’t see locals covering up in summer, but few brave the cold bare-headed in winter, when hats become both a practical necessity and fun fashion accessory. All the department stores are well-stocked with felt, fur and wool hats in winter, although Galeries Lafayette has the biggest range for women after a modestly priced piece.

For a special occasion, Fiona Bennett should be top of the list. After 20 years of practising her craft, the British-born designer has developed her own particular style in which feather features strongly.
