Sports Goods

As the birthplace of sportswear giants Adidas and Puma, it’s hardly a surprise that Germany stacks up well when it comes to sourcing sporting goods. From footwear to gym gear, there are no excuses for donning dodgy tracksuits in Berlin.

Adidas has a flagship store in Mitte selling everything from shoes and soccer boots to tracksuits and T-shirts (Münzstrasse 13). Not to be outdone, its American rivals Nike has its own flagship store just down the road, with an equally large range of branded sportswear.

For a wider range of brands, Sport 88 in Kreuzberg stocks a range of top names, such as Adidas, Nike, Fila, Reebok and Kappa.

General sports equipment is available at Karstadt Sport in Charlottenburg, where you can browse among four floors of sporting goods including tennis, basketball, football, and even rock climbing gear. Too many Bratwurst and Pfannkuchen? It also has a good range of gym equipment to help you get back into shape.

Big chains such as Runners Point and Footlocker have an affordable selection of international sports shoe brands, but serious runners should head straight for Lang & Laufladen, which specialises in long distance and sprint shoes and has expert staff on hand to help explain the pros and cons of various footwear. If you’re yet to score a hole-in-one with a custom-made set of clubs, then Golfschlag in Charlottenburg will help (its motto is ‘give your swing a better chance’). Hajo Plötz also has golf equipment, but largely specialises in tennis gear as the owner is an ex-professional. You’re sure to look like a pro yourself donning the luxury brands available, including Ralph Lauren, Bogner and Lacoste.

Asia Sport in Kreuzberg has more than 2,000 martial arts-related products, such as karate and judo outfits, training gear for aikido, skipping ropes, books and DVDs, while dance enthusiasts should hot foot it to Pro Danse for ballet gear, flamenco outfits and tap dance shoes.
