Home Furnishings & Accessories
Berlin’s emergence as Europe’s capital of cool is not restricted to fashion and art. Funky furniture shops are plentiful, with something to suit all tastes (but often favouring retro, art deco and ultra modern design). Prices are perhaps a little higher than in other parts of Europe, although if you’re into antiques or original retro-style accessories, the many flea markets and second-hand shops can be a treasure trove of bargains.
Kantstrasse in Charlottenburg has all manner of über-cool modern furniture, lighting and homewares outlets, selling anything and everything you need to create a cosy casa – from speciality tile stores to antique lamp shops.
If sleek retro is more your style, Bella Form in Prenzlauer Berg (030 4400 9262) has Italian-designed furniture and some stylish pieces, such as book towers and curvy, feminine lamps. Locals are big fans of Kollwitz 45, which has bowls, vases, lamps and small furniture, including unusual side-tables, such as a giant black pig with a serving tray attached to its head.
International labels such as Kartell and Ligne Roset have signature stores in Berlin, and can be found among other groovy goods at hip boutiques.
The department stores offer a good selection of home accessories, with KaDeWe the best of the lot, offering both high quality (and high prices) on items such as lamps, dinnerware, linen and curtains. If you’re after wallpaper, choose from some 3,000 designs at Berlintapete (which will also custom design if you bring a digital photo).
For more exotic home furnishings, head to Hof Atelier for comfy hammocks, cast iron and Chinese-style lanterns and a colourful range of cushions and rugs. A few shops further down is Bella Casa, selling beautiful Arabic tiles and oriental floor cushions.
No city is complete these days without an IKEA, and Berlin is no exception. IKEA has some smart designs at budget prices (just make sure that you brush up on your handyman skills first as many of the flat-pack furniture items are assembled at home). Best avoided at weekends.
