Flowers

Berlin might not be renowned as a city of romance, but flowers are cheap and plentiful. A sprig of orchids can cost little more than a cup of coffee, while in-season flowers can be snapped up for €5. Although some supermarkets have a budget range of fresh bunches and pot plants year-round, you can generally pick and choose a generously sized bouquet, wrapped and ribboned for less than €25 in a floral boutique. Florists fall into several categories: budget (scour the markets, find a Blume 2000 chain (www.blume2000.de) or try the even cheaper Kreuzberg institution Blumen Melek); traditional (Blumen und Gartenkunst, which also offers flower arrangement courses; and the magical Der Rosentraum, which stocks more than 4,000 rose varieties), and artistic (Grünzeit, where sex toys are an additional extra). Potted and house plants are available at most florists, as are candles, vases and various other accessories. Many florists cater for weddings and funerals, but it’s wise to order ahead before special occasions, such as Mother’s Day, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. Interflora offers a worldwide delivery service, while many local stores will deliver to a Berlin address. If you’re stuck for a quick gift, the larger U-Bahn stations have flower merchants offering bunches from €2.
