Crime & Safety

Amsterdam is a comfortably safe city provided you take sensible precautions. Burglaries and thefts (including pickpocketing) are going down and road safety is improving. Seven out of every ten crimes reported concern theft and almost a quarter (in 2005) relate to something stolen from a car. Just as in other cities, conspicuous display of valuables is unwise. The chances of having a wallet/backpack/laptop stolen are highest on the trains travelling to and from the airport and on public transport generally. The red light district is not an area to carry valuables, particularly a camera. After police clean-ups, drug dealers and junkies have moved on from Zeedijk, but the area can still be threatening especially late at night. In terms of cars, Niets er in...Niets er uit' (nothing in, nothing out) is the police advice. Don't leave valuables in your car, not even the boot, and open the (empty) glove compartment to show there's nothing there.
