Dos & Don’ts

Amsterdam is a famously laid back city where pretty much anything goes, but a bit of self control is in order. Don't smoke a joint anywhere except inside a coffee shop. Don't buy drugs/bikes/hotel rooms off strangers in the street. Don't walk in the fietspad – that's the lane with the cute drawing of a bicycle on it. If you are on a bike, watch out for the tram lines. You'll see a lot of cycling through red lights, but the police are on the case (instant €50 fine). You can also be fined if you: a) ride without lights at night, b) have no bicycle bell, or c) if you cycle in pedestrianised areas (like the Leidsestraat or Kalverstraat). Do enjoy Amsterdam for free: an architectural tour, a picnic in the Vondelpark, a boat trip across the IJ, a Wednesday lunchtime concert at the Concertgebouw or Boekmanzaal with singers from the Netherlands Opera. Pay attention to rubbish etiquette. Get out of Amsterdam from time to time – castles, beaches, masterpieces of hydraulic engineering that keep the water out – everything is so near. One last important thing – don't take photos of the women in the windows in the red light district.
