Women travelling alone will not feel uncomfortable in Amsterdam. The sexes are unquestionably equal here and solo women travellers are a common sight. Everybody speaks English (or French or German) should some assistance be required, and public transport is safe. Really, it's just common sense. The seedier parts of town (such as the red light district) can be intimidating for women so solo exploration of these areas, particularly at night, is not advisable. If you want someone to leave you alone the phrase is 'Laat me met rust' (Leave me in peace) or simply 'Ga weg!' (Go away).
