Tourist Information

The VVV (Vereniging voor Vreemdelingenverkeer!) is the organisation for visitors and tourists in the Netherlands and they have outposts all over the country (www.vvv.amsterdam.nl). In Amsterdam, there are two offices at Centraal Station, one at Leidseplein (see the website above for map location) and one at the airport. There are a wide range of brochures, maps and guides for sale and the VVV can also (for a fee) book hotel accommodation. You can sometimes get a good deal if you do this because hotels submit a daily rate each morning that fluctuates wildly depending on individual hotel occupancy. The ANWB (the Dutch Automobile Association) are a very useful source of (mostly Dutch) guides and maps for cyclists and car users, with some useful route-planning and distance calculators. The city website (www.amsterdam.nl), its English version and international brand (www.iamsterdam.nl), and www.amsterdamtourist.com all provide masses of information and tips for visitors and residents. In addition to these 'official' sources, there are innumerable directories and web-based guides about the city, catering for every type of visitor.
