Shopping & Amenities

Warschauer Strasse and Frankfurter Allee are both major shopping thoroughfares where you can take care of the practicalities at supermarkets, banks, chemists and pharmacies. The shopping area inside Ostbahnhof enjoys a perk rare in Berlin: all the shops, including a Rewe supermarket, are allowed to stay open on Sunday. There’s a flea market at Boxhagener Platz on Sundays, and the area around Simon-Dach-Strasse offers clothing shops, including Altes Textilkaufhaus (Boxhagener Strasse 93, 03 2903 8568), hair salons, vintage furniture shops, including Mondos Arts, and record shops. Friedrichshain’s greatest outdoor amenity is the expansive Volkspark Friedrichshain, where at least half the population of the district seems to be sitting on the grass on any given sunny day. Soon to have a major effect on the atmosphere of Friedrichshain is O2 World, the largest event arena in Berlin, scheduled to open near Warschauer Strasse in late 2008.
