There’s not much in the way of accomodation around Shinjuku station. Single bedroom and smaller apartments are available, but they will take some hunting down, especially if you want a reasonable price. But further afield there are many options. Shin-Okubo is a popular place for expats to secure an apartment. There are also many guesthouses in this area that cater exclusively to foreigners. Rents in Shin-Okubo are reasonable as many Japanese consider the area to be dangerous. This is partly due to all the Chinese and Koreans living here. However, it’s actually very safe and you’ll be as comfortable here as in any other Tokyo neighbourhood. Shinjuku itself is not a particularly nice place for expat families to set up shop. Some areas can be somewhat seedy and there isn’t much for children to do.
