Life in Shinjuku-ku can be rather noisy if you are close to the major stations. Get into the neighbourhoods, and things quiet down. Kabuki-cho is an area that is frequently cited by police as a not-so-safe area (in relative terms in Japan), however it’s quite far from the usual residential areas and doesn’t post a threat to most people.
