Driving Habits

Drivers should be conscious of the fact that traffic laws are interpreted loosely. Never underestimate the ability of the driver next to you to do something stupid or dangerous and be especially careful when approaching pedestrian crossings or places where oncoming traffic may take a left turn. Do not expect other drivers to signal or acknowledge your right of way, and be aware that in the case of most accidents, bystanders will have a large say in determining culpability and will frequently side with Chinese drivers when there is ambiguity. Many drivers who get into accidents prefer to settle the matter with cash on the spot, rather than involve the authorities and risk losing points on their licence. However, you should recognise that doing so will cause you to forfeit any insurance claim you might wish to make. Although nearly every cab driver in the city uses their mobile phone on the road, it is technically against the law to do so.
