As a motorist, be aware that pedestrians and cyclists will often cross the street without regard for their own personal safety. Crossing guards are grossly ineffective. If anything, show more caution at intersections where they are directing traffic. Raised pavements are safe for pedestrians, but cars so often make use of bike lanes that they should not be considered safe, especially in busy areas.
