Single Parents
Pros and cons
Being a working single parent in Dubai may seem daunting for a number of reasons. Firstly, as an expat, your support system may not be as great as back home, where friends and family can help out, and, secondly, in a country where marriage and family are so important, you may feel a little like the ‘odd one out’.
However, once you get used to people enquiring where your husband is (if you have a child with you, people assume you’re married), there are actually lots of advantages to living in Dubai as a working single parent. For one thing, there’s the standard of childcare: the nurseries in Dubai are very good and a few offer full day-care; they are also generally much more affordable than in your home country. There is also the option of having a live-in nanny, which means that not only can you work as a single parent, but can enjoy an active social life too.
