Eixample

This neighbourhood is full of character. It contains five parts which make up the central swathe of the city, the Eixample, which is the 19th century project of architect Ildefons Cerdà, divided between right (dret) and left (esquerra); Sagrada Familia, including the famed cathedral-in-progress, Sant Antoni, with its popular market; and the least well-known, Fort Pienc. There are wide, bustling avenues like Passeig de Gràcia, quiet, tree lined side streets and Barcelona’s principal square, Plaça Catalunya. It is also home to one of Barcelona’s main gay communities, the ‘Gaixample’.
