Mother & Baby

Babies are big business in Dubai; there are a multitude of shops selling baby paraphernalia, and many brands you’ll know from your home country. You shouldn’t have trouble finding nursery essentials like bottles, buggies, changing bags, clothes, cots, prams, rocking chairs and travel cots, and there are plenty of shops selling maternity ranges.

Supermarkets stock formula, nappies and wipes and many sell a good range of bottles and feeding equipment. Choithrams has the best selection of formula, stocking popular UK brands SMA and Cow & Gate. Pharmacies sell baby essentials and some have breast pumps.

Safety 1st and Maxi Cosi car seats are widely available and should fit most cars; you can also rent car seats, buggies, strollers and other equipment from Rentacrib (rentacrib.ae) – if you hire a car seat its staff will fit it for you free of charge. IKEA has a small range of nursery furniture such as cots, changing tables and bathtub, plus a selection of cot sheets and blankets and some baby-safe toys. Other essential accessories for pregnancy include a ‘Bump Belt’, a device that redirects your car seatbelt under your bump for protection, and which can be found in Mothercare and some Spinneys stores.

For clothing, The Dubai Mall has a very good selection of well-known stores that are grouped in one area on the top floor, and a range of high-end brands like Cacharel Paris and Burberry. Pablosky, Okaidi and Pumpkin Patch sell colourful and practical clothes. Many retailers have jumped on the maternity fashion bandwagon and now offer fashionable outfits for mums-to-be, including many high street stores, the main department stores and the popular baby shops. And you can shop online at blushandbloom.com and luxelittle.com for fashionable maternity lingerie, nightwear, dresses and ‘mama and baby’ twinsets. TKD Lingerie offers a pretty maternity range.

Storage bags for breast milk are widely available in Dubai (Playtex, Medela and Avent brands). Boppy breastfeeding pillows are available in Toys R Us, and Arabian Home Health Care (arabianhomecare.com), opposite Rashid Hospital, also stocks pillows for breastfeeding – ask for them when you go in.
