Textiles, Tailoring & Repairs

If you are looking for fabric, you have several options, including the Textile Souk near Al Fahidi Street, Satwa, or the shopping malls, most of which have at least one fabric outlet. Prices start from a few dirhams for a metre of basic cotton. The Textile Souk can get busy, but the sheer range of fabrics makes it worthwhile. There are several haberdashery shops in the same area should you wish to buy matching buttons, bows or cotton. Satwa Road has a good collection of general fabric stores and a few good haberdashers; Plant Street is the place to go for upholstery. IKEA and Fabindia also stock a range of vibrant fabrics that can be used for cushions, curtains or bedding.

Tailors can be found in most areas, but there is a concentration of stores in the Textile Souk, and on the main street in Satwa. For simple alterations and repairs, such as hemming, head to one of these areas and take your pick – for simple work, the general standard is fine. For anything more complex, the best way to select a tailor is by recommendation. A good tailor can make a garment from scratch, either from a photo or by copying an existing garment. It may take a few fitting sessions and alterations to get it just right, but it’s worth the effort, and with tailoring services so cheap compared to other international cities, it’s well worth getting some custom-made clothes while living in Dubai. Shirts usually start from Dhs.30 and suits from Dhs.500.
