Home & Furniture

This is one of Dubai’s most buoyant retail sectors; most tastes are catered for, from everyone’s favourite Swedish flatpack store to unique ethnic pieces, to the latest designer concepts and specialist children’s furniture stores.

Al Qouz Industrial Area is home to a number of furniture warehouses, many of which sell pieces crafted from Indonesian teak. Their hot, dusty warehouses are not the most chic of all options, but prices are excellent and after a good polish the furniture looks fabulous. Genuine antiques are available but very rare (and therefore very expensive); including pieces from Oman and Yemen. Real investment pieces that you’ll want to keep and take back home can be bought at Natuzzi. For exotic designs, try Safita Trading Est (04 339 3230) which stocks a range of exotic items from India and the Far East. For unusual designer items, head to THE One Fusion. Another warehouse worth visiting is Dubai Antique Museum – an enormous treasure trove of furniture and quirky pieces, as well as souvenirs and lots more.

Most shopping areas will have at least one furniture store, and you’ll be spoilt for choice in the larger malls. Dubai Festival City Mall has the city’s only IKEA, as well as several other furniture and home accessories stores.

Panache Interiors offers design services and ready-made home accessories. BAFCO is the place to hit if you’re looking for office furniture with added style.

The transient nature of some of Dubai’s population results in an active second-hand furniture market. Items are advertised in the classified sections of the local newspapers and on websites like dubizzle.com, but supermarket noticeboards are the best source; this is also the place to find garage sales – you can get some real bargains.
