Addiction Counselling & Rehabilitation

Addiction is a major issue in Irish society, and there are several options for people dealing with addiction problems. A number of conselling and rehabilitation programmes are available, both publicly and privately. If you wish to avail of the public services, your GP can refer you to an addiction counsellor for an assessment, and they will discuss whether in-patient or out-patient care is most suitable for you. In the case of private centres, some of the costs of these are likely to be covered by health insurance, but it is important to research this as aftercare is often excluded from cover. These ‘courses’ provide excellent care, but many recovering addicts need a more regular support system integrated into their daily lives. A wide range of Twelve-Step groups (AA, Al-Anon, Alateen, Adult Children of Alcoholics, NA, GA and OA particularly) are available in Dublin. Many of them have meetings in the main rehabilitation hospitals, which is especially helpful for former residents who may wish to retain a link with a familiar atmosphere in the early stages of their recovery. Meetings are also held in churches, parish halls, schools and other public spaces. Details about fellowship meetings can be obtained directly from the relevant organisation or by checking local notice-boards.
