Gynaecology & Obstetrics
In Ireland, it is usual to find a gynaecologist by word of mouth – through recommendations from either your friends and colleagues or your GP. It is not necessary to see a gynaecologist to obtain the most common methods of contraception, as your GP can prescribe the contraceptive pill and emergency contraception (the morning-after pill). Condoms can be purchased from any pharmacy and from many supermarkets and corner shops. Your GP may also be able perform a cervical smear test, but many women prefer to see a gynaecologist. Male gynaecologists are very common, so it is important to specify if you wish to see a female. Many gynaecological services are also available through your local Well-Woman centre (see www.wellwomancentre.ie).
