Dentists & Orthodontists

Most dentistry in Ireland is carried out privately, although government medical card holders and schoolchildren are entitled to free public dental care. For other groups, the cost of some dental procedures can be claimed against PRSI, although you must have a minimum number of contributions in order to qualify (visit www.welfare.ie/publications for details of the Treatment Benefit Scheme). If you are eligible, you can have dental work carried out as normal by any private dentist who is on the Department of Social and Family Affairs panel, which most dentists are. Your dentist can give you a claim form. The cost of dental care in Dublin can be high – up to €100 for a filling, so it’s a good idea to shop around and get quotes before committing yourself to treatment.

For young children, some dentists specialise in paediatric dentistry. Most dentists recommend bringing your child for their first visit at around 3 to 4 years of age. If you’re a nervous patient and require sedation during dental procedures, contact the Dental Council (01 676 2069) for a list of practices where this is available.

Cosmetic dentistry is becoming more popular in Dublin, and many dental practices now offer whitening services. There are also some independent clinics that specialise in whitening treatments. For teeth straightening and other orthodontic treatment, your dentist can refer you to a reputable orthodontist. Orthodontic services are available publicly for school-age children, but the waiting list is quite long.
