Counselling & Therapy

Psychiatric care is still somewhat new in China, and many avoid treatment for fear of being socially outcast or shamed. Few dedicated facilities exist, few doctors are properly trained, and almost no public counsellors are available who can speak English.

Beijing Huilongguan Hospital is the largest public psychiatric facility near Beijing. It can handle adult and child care for behavioural and psychological disorders, and offers psychotherapy. There is a private facility with English-speaking staff, but a general lack of understanding of expat issues in public hospitals. Domestic and personal counselling is available through hotlines and support groups. For more serious care, help is available at larger private clinics and hospitals, though it can be fairly costly (over ¥800 an hour). Make sure that you check with your insurance provider about any coverage that they offer.
