Chinese massage techniques are often extremely deep, which can be quite uncomfortable to those who are unprepared. Usually, your masseuse will be unable to speak English, which can render attempts to change the depth of the massage useless. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you feel that a massage is too harsh or painful.

Massage houses can also serve as covers for illicit adult activities. Knowing which are legitimate, and which are not can take some careful judgement.
