Caving
For extreme sports junkies who enjoy the thrill of trying something new, caving is the adrenaline-filled answer. Known in Spanish as espeleología (l’espeleologia in Catalan), caving combines physical endurance, mental strength and exploration of underground geographical wonders. It is important to take necessary health precautions and first-timers should seek out a guide. The Catalan Caving Federation (www.espeleo-cat.org) can inform you of upcoming group expeditions. Tailored trips are usually led by experienced and qualified caving instructors, but for those who are experienced enough, self-guided solo excursions are also an option. Centre Excursionista de Catalunya (www.cec-centre.org) is an excellent organisation that regularly organises trips to include caving, hiking, camping, skiing or climbing. The CEC attracts members of all nationalities; try their multi-lingual website for upcoming events and trips.
