Hiking
Hiking, known as senderismo (senderisme in Catalan), is a popular activity in Barcelona and Catalonia. There are a number of hiking options available in the form of guided day trips, multi-day group excursions and self-guided, marked trails that you can navigate yourself. The most extensive and well-marked trail near to Barcelona is Montserrat. Consult the Federació d’Entitats Excursionista de Catalunya (FEEC) website (www.feec.org) for maps of these. Guided excursions are a popular alternative to going it alone because they enable you to learn about the history, culture and biodiversity of the region in more depth. If you want to seek advice from fellow hikers or alpinists, www.senderisme.org is an online mountaineering community with hiking-related discussion forums.
