Chess
Barcelona has more chess clubs than any other city in the world. It is not surprising then, to find that it is an avidly followed game here, played by all ages. You often see chess played in squares and outdoor terraces, but if you prefer a livelier atmosphere, there are bars that keep a games selection in-house. Denver bar (Plaça Tetuan 16), has chess and Monopoly games available. For listings of chess clubs in Barcelona, visit www.chessclub.com. Alternatively, consult the Federacio Catalana d’Escacs (www.escacs.cat) and the World Chess Federation (www.fide.com). The English Speaking Club holds chess nights from time to time (www.englishspeakingclub.com) if you're intimidated by all-Catalan clubs. When browsing the net, bear in mind that Spanish (ajedrez) and Catalan (escacs) translations of chess differ quite dramatically.
